Thursday, January 10 VIII Cycle of Japanese Cinema - Circuit
Circuit (Kairo - 回路。) Director: Kiyoshi Kurosawa, 2001. 118 minutes. A series of bizarre events start to gather around Michi, employee of a company dedicated to sell decorative plants. These events start with the suicide of Taguchi, his workmate, after which several people start to disappear leaving no trace but a shadow. Meanwhile, college student Ryosuke's computer enters automatically into a webpage that proposes him to establish a connection to paranormal life. Upon investigation, Ryosuke stumbles upon an unsettling explanation: the afterlife, destined to spirits, has filled up with too many souls, and these have started enter the world of the living. These spirits when making contact with a person, depresses them and drives them to suicide. Ryosuke first considers the explanation ridiculous until a friend disappears under the same strange circumstances and he starts to investigate. Along the road, he encounters Michi, who is attempting to escape the siege from the spirits. Organized by the Embassy of Japan in Peru and the Peruvian-Japanese Association. Thursday, January 24 VIII Cycle of Japanese Cinema - The Ghost from the Bar
The Ghost from the Bar (Izakaya Yuurei - 居酒屋ゆうれい) Director: Takayoshi Watanabe, 1994. 110 minutes. Sotaro, the owner of the Kazusa-ya bar, has just married Satoko - an act in which he breaks his promise to his late wife Shizuko, of never marrying again. The spirit of Shikuzo doesn't forgive his betrayal and she returns in the form of a ghost, charging at Sotaro for his lack of compromise. Despite the reasons given by the husband, of having loved her inmensely but that she now loves Satoko, the ghost can't comprehend. This is how a war starts between the two women, with the bar as the battlefield. Sotaro even seeks aid from a monk who gives him a painting which can supposedly lock up the spirit - but Shizuko is not an easy prey and she'll also bring weapons of her own all the way from the underworld to regain her turf.
